I usually don't partake in popular meme-related artwork due to the temporary nature of memes. The Adventure Time meme, pixels meme, and other site gimmicks that promote peoples artwork through community-made trends. Let me be clear, I have NOTHING against these memes, hell, some are actually pretty amusing and I understand why people want to participate. I just don't do it because I myself am un-trendy and not always motivated enough to join.
However, there is one meme on the site that I've always found constructive and often thought of doing myself if I had the time. The "Draw This Again Meme" which compares a newly made version of an image you've drawn before with the original in your gallery. Always thought it was a great idea. It gives you a walk down memory lane, allows you to kind of merge your old ideas with your current style, and most importantly shows how much you've improved as an artist. I'm sure the last one is what the meme is all about.
For the longest time I've been avoiding it, but at the same time enjoying seeing the amazing transformations some artists have in their galleries. Shaky doodles turned into gorgeous works with only a few years in between them. The main thing that's always prevented me from trying, outside of just refusing trends, is the fear that maybe it would be premature to do something like this. Not sure I've grown enough as an artist or developed enough of a style to compare a new version to my original. I do believe I've gotten better, both on paper and digitally, but have I accumulated enough skill to show significant improvement? Like I said, guess that's what the meme is all about.
Truth is, one pic of mine that really was a milestone for my work has me asking a question recently. Just how far have I come? I can't resist the temptation anymore. I want to remake that particular piece to see if I can make it a bit better, or at least show that I've become a stronger artist.
Whaddya think? Should I go for it, or just leave the past where it belongs?
